Need your car donation to count for this tax year? The IRS uses the date your vehicle is physically picked up as the official donation date. That means your car must be towed or driven away on or before December 31 for you to claim the deduction on this year’s return. Scheduling alone is not enough. To be safe, Capital Wheels recommends booking your pickup in Albany at least 3–5 business days before December 31 so we can confirm a slot. Our partner charity, Heritage for the Blind, runs dispatch Monday through Saturday throughout the holiday season.
Capital Wheels makes it fast and local. In the Capital District—from Center Square, Pine Hills, and the South End to Colonie, Guilderland, Latham, Delmar, Troy, Schenectady, and Rensselaer—we arrange free pickup, even if your vehicle doesn’t run. No inspection, no repairs. Once your car sells, Heritage for the Blind mails your written acknowledgment (and Form 1098‑C for vehicles over $500), but your deduction year is locked in by the pickup date, not the mailing date. You can start the secure online form in about two minutes or call to reserve one of the remaining year‑end slots.

Choose a pickup day before Dec 31
5 minutesOur team reviews your request and offers the earliest available pickup, often within a few days. For a this‑year deduction, select a date on or before December 31. We recommend contacting us 3–5 business days ahead to secure your preferred slot.
Confirm your Albany pickup details
5 minutesYou’ll receive a confirmation with your pickup window and any title guidance for New York. Let us know if the vehicle is non‑running, blocked in, or in a garage in Albany, Colonie, Troy, or nearby so the tow driver arrives prepared.
Vehicle is picked up – donation date is set
15–30 minutesOn pickup day, the driver completes quick paperwork and tows your car at no charge. The IRS donation date is the actual pickup date. If we pick up on or before December 31, your deduction applies to this tax year.
Receive your tax acknowledgment by mail
VariesAfter your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails your written acknowledgment (and Form 1098‑C if the sale exceeds $500). This can arrive weeks later, but your deduction year remains the year of pickup—locked in when we collected the car.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Pickup date controls the tax year
For vehicle donations, the IRS treats the day your car is physically picked up as the donation date. If your vehicle leaves your driveway by December 31, it generally counts as a deduction for that tax year.
Form 1098‑C for vehicles over $500
If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind issues IRS Form 1098‑C. This form shows the gross sale price, which you generally use as the maximum amount you can deduct on your return.
Written acknowledgment usually within 30 days of sale
The charity must send your written acknowledgment, including Form 1098‑C when required, within 30 days after the vehicle is sold. This may arrive well into the new year, but it still supports your deduction for the pickup year.
Deduction typically equals the sale price
In most cases, your federal deduction is limited to the amount the charity receives when the vehicle is sold, not a price guide value. There are exceptions if the charity uses the vehicle directly, but most car donations are based on sale proceeds.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To claim a car donation, you generally need to itemize deductions on IRS Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Speak with a tax professional to confirm what makes sense for your specific situation.
